The knowledge structure

How Masslore Works

Masslore organizes fandom knowledge in a five-level hierarchy that provides a structured architecture for comprehensive, organized franchise documentation.

Level 1
World

Top level brand container. Holds a full multiverse of content across media, product types, history, timelines, reboots, adaptations, discographies, etc.

Examples: Marvel, The Tolkien Legendarium, The Wizarding World, Star Wars
Level 2
Continuum

A shared frame (canon, world, production identity, era). The frame holds everything inside it regardless of provenance: official, fan, academic, etc.

Examples: The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars Legends, Peter Jackson's Middle-earth
Level 3
Franchise

A story or thematic thread: a narrative spine running through one or more Works released separately and often at different times. Has no release date of its own.

Examples: Avengers Comic Book Series, Sam Raimi's Spider-man Films, The Hobbit Trilogy, Gilmore Girls, Original Harry Potter Films
Level 4
Work

A single release unit. One Work, one release date. The Work IS the unit released on that date.

Examples: Avengers: Endgame (film), Gilmore Girls Pilot, Dune (1965 novel), Action Comics #1
Level 5
Work Part

Anything namable inside a Work that wasn't produced as a discrete release on its own, such as songs, scenes, characters, places, objects, runway looks, lip syncs, catchphrases, logos, chapters.

Examples: Rory Gilmore, Dune Chapter 1

What each record contains

Every entry at every level can contain: factual information such as IP titles, character names, creator and production information, cast and crew details, and other information that represents the IP in its factual context. Entries are written in original language by contributors. Masslore does not reproduce copyrighted material.
